Like T. pomeroli but more conical in edge view, with flatter spiral side, generally lower trochospiral, & more compressed chambers.

Like T. frontosa but larger, with more compressed chamber morphology, and at least 4 chambers in the final whorl.
Turborotalia frontosa
Like Subbotina but distinguished by pustulose wall texture, high arched aperture and slightly compressed final chamber. Also has a strong bias in coiling direction. Chambers more globular than in other Turborotalia species.

Like T. increbescens but wider, more open umbilicus, more umbilically centered aperture and more globular chamber shape.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Globanomalinidae): Hedbergellids - trochospiral, mostly low trochospiral. Apertures of earlier formed chambers remain visible around the umbilicus.
This taxon: Trochospiral with umbilical-extraumbilical aperture.
Wall smooth pustulose, can be weakly cancellate, & may defoliate.

Trochospiral, varying from globular and inflated to strongly compressed and biconvex; flattened on spiral side; primary aperture umbilical-extraumbilical, usually a high arch with bordering lip; imperforate band or keel present in some species.

Phylogenetic relations

The two species that survive into the Oligocene are quite similar and form a spectrum of morphology from the more ‘globigerinid’ T. ampliapertura to the more ‘globorotaliid’ T. increbescens. Of the two, T. ampliapertura is by far the most abundant (e.g., Leckie and others, 1993; Wade and Pearson, 2008). [Pearson et al. 2018]
