Taxonomy

Citation: Orbulina d’Orbigny, 1839
taxonomic rank: genus
Type species: Orbulina universus
Synonyms:
Taxonomic discussion: Orbulina universa, the type species of Orbulina, was originally described from Recent sands off Cuba in 1839, and since then, several authors have amended the original description and diagnosis of the genus (Costa, 1856, see Ellis and Messina, 1940, et seq.; Brönnimann, 1951; Blow, 1956). [Kennett & Srinivasan 1983]

Catalog entries: Orbulina, Coscinosphaera, Biorbulina

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Globigerinidae): Wall spinose, usually with 3½-6 globular chambers in final whorl, trochospiral or planispiral
This taxon: Spherical terminal chamber:

NB These concise distinguishing features statements are used in the tables of daughter-taxa to act as quick summaries of the differences between e.g. species of one genus.
They are being edited as the site is developed and comments on them are especially welcome.
