Description


Morphology:
Test small, 130–190 µm in maximum diameter, bicon- vex, low trochospiral, generally quadrilobate in equatorial outline, broadly rounded in edge view; proloculus large, ranging from 30 to 45 µm in diameter; chambers subglobular, rapidly enlarging in size until final whorl, typically 8, sometimes 10 total chambers in adult specimens arranged in 1.5 to 2.5 whorls, final whorl with 3.5 to 5 chambers; sutures slightly depressed and radial on spiral and umbilical sides, umbilicus closed, sometimes covered by sutural bullae; wall fine- ly perforated by pores that are 0.8 to 1.5 µm in diameter, with a mostly smooth surface except for areas along umbilical sutures and umbilical area, which may be covered with concentrations of blunt pustules; aperture a broad, low interiomarginal, extraumbilical-umbilical arch on early chambers, becomes obscured by bridgelike projections with accessory apertures along the umbilical suture of the ampullate final chamber. Biostratigraphic distribution

Geological Range:
Notes: Antarcticella antarctica has been reported from shallow marine sed-iments in the Ross Sea basins of Antarctica, ranging from the latest Oligocene through middle Miocene (Leckie and Webb, 1985). It was also reported from southern Argentina in upper Eocene-lower Oligocene (Hromic, 1988, 1990) and offshore Argentina in Oligocene-lower Miocene neritic sediments (Malumian and Nanez, 1996).
Last occurrence (top): within Middle Miocene Sub-Epoch (11.62-15.97Ma, top in Serravallian stage). Data source: Liu et al 1998
