Taxonomy

Citation: Planomalina buxtorfi (Gandolfi, 1942)
taxonomic rank: Species
Basionym: Planulina buxtorfi
Synonyms:
Taxonomic discussion: Two morphotypes are recognized so far, one with a tendency to uncoil (Lipson-Benitah and Almogi Labin, 2000) and a second with a double keel, named P. buxtorfi bicarinata by Randrianasolo and Aglada (1989), sporadically occur in the assemblages yielding common and large-sized P. buxtorfi. Both morphotypes are within the morphologic variability of the species. [copied from Chronos database]

Entries in the Catalog of original descriptions: Planulina buxtorfi, Planomalina apsidostroba

Emended description:

written in Italian in Ellis and Messina. But in Wonders, 1975 emend., he writes: Test planispiral, rather deeply umbilicate, somewhat evolute, equatorial periphery lobulate in outline, angular, and provided with a distinct keel, which may be nodose in the earlier part of the last whorl. Chambers triangular in apertural view, reniform to semicircular in lateral view. There are 7-11, mostly 9 chambers in the last whorl, increasing gradually in size as added. Aperture an equatorial arch, interiomarginal in position, extending on either side into the umbilicus and backwards along the spiral suture, and bordered by a distinct lip. The lateral umbilical extensions of earlier apertures remain visible as relict apertures with their lips. Wall perforate, smooth, except for the keel and raised sutures.
