Citation: Dicarinella elata Lamolda 1977Taxonomic rank: speciesType specimens: 1029Type age (chronostrat): Lower TuronianType locality: Section along the local road to Menoyo from Ayala, Alava Provine, northern SpainType repository: Bilbao, Spain; Bilbao University - BIPA (Paleontological Collection)
Original Description Test trochospiral; ventral side strongly convex; spiral side flat to slightly convex. Sixteen to eighteen chambers arranged in 2.5 to 3 whorls; six to seven chambers in outer whorl. Equatorial periphery lobulate; axial periphery sharp. Single beaded keel with double row of pustules, at least in early chambers of outer whorl as in Marginotruncana sigali (Reichel) [Globotruncana (Globotruncana) sigali, 1950]; double keel in preceding whorl. Sutures on spiral side raised, beaded and curved, outlining semicircular chambers; sutures on ventral side radial and depressed, lying between subtriangular inflated chambers. Primary aperture interiomarginal, extraumbilical-umbilical in position. Umbilicus large, its diameter 1/3 of diameter of test or more, covered by portici in well-preserved specimens. Test smooth, except that early chambers of outer whorl are rugose umbilically. Wall perforate, except for keel and raised sutures, which are imperforate. Size: D = 0.68 mm, H = 0.10 mm, H' = 0.22mm, 0 = 0.30 mm. Etymology: Latin elata = tall. Refers to the fact that the umbilical side is strongly convex. Extra details from original publication Remarks: Dicarinella elata Lamolda. n. sp .. can be differentiated from D. indica (Jacob and Sastry) by possession of a single keel instead of a double keel on the outer whorl. from M. marianosi (Douglas) by depressed sutures on the umbilical side instead of the raised ones that are characteristic of Marginotruncana, and from Helveroglobotruncana helvetica (Bolli) by conical rather than hemispherical chambers and by a strong, marginal (never dorsal) keel on all chambers. Dicarinella elata Lamolda is related to Praeglobotruncana delrioensis (Plummer). from which it has arisen via the flattening of the spiral side and the doubling of the keel. both by proterogenesis; the shift of the primary aperture to the extraumbilical-umbilical position. and the development of "portici"". Therefore. it is related to D. indica (Jacob and Sastry) in its origins. so that it might be difficult to distinguish between atypical specimens of both species. D. elata Lamolda is the ancestor of Marginotruncana marianosi (Douglas). The transition from one to the other occurs by changing from depressed umbilical sutures to raised ones. while the spiral side remains untouched. Colom (1952) cited as G. (Thalmanninella) helvetica Bolli specimens of D. elata Lamolda in the Turonian of Navarre. about 150 km. east of my localities. Marianas and Zingula (1966) figured. as Globotruncana sp. A a specimen like D. elata Lamolda. but with a double keel on the first chambers of the last whorl. Douglas (1969) stated that Globotruncana sp. A is a synonym of G. marianosi Douglas. but he is wrong because the figure (Marianas and Zingula, 1966. pl. 39, fig. 1a-c) shows depressed sutures rather than raised ones.
Occurrence: D. elata is a taxon with few specimens among our planktonic foraminifera. At the El Refugio section it is present in the lower part and the top. while at the El Cabrio section it is present throughout. It is principally associated with Whiteinella baltica Douglas and Rankin. W aprica (Loeblich and Tappan). Dicarinella aff. schneegansi (Sigal). D. difformis (Gandolfi). D. indica (Jacob and Sastry) and D. algeriana (Caron).
Range: To date. D. elata has been found widespread from early Turonian to early Coniacian, although its presence in the late Cenomanian should also be mentioned"
