Remarks: The unusually strongly embracing chambers on the ventral side, together with the very low arched aperture, relatively compressed shape, and hispid keel, give G. pliozea a very distinctive character. G. pliozea appears earliest in core 5-3 coiling predominantly dextrally (2S:60D). Populations coil randomly in the upper part of core 15, predominantly dextrally (3S:50D) in 14-6, sinistrally (6S:2D) in 14-4, dextrally (lS:9D) in 14-3 and 14-2, and then sinistrally in cores 13 (60S:5D), 12, 11, and 10.
Distinctly plano-conical populations with less-embracing chambers, in core 9, are tentatively included as variants of G. pliozea.
G. pliozea is common in the Pliocene of the East Coast Basin, North Island, appearing in the Mangapoike River section at the same level as G. crassaformis, immediately above the range-zone of G. sphericomiozea. As in Site 284, it appears coiling dextrally and undergoes 2 or 3 reversals of dominant coiling direction in the lower Opoitian before adopting a stable sinistrally coiling habit.
