Taxonomy

Citation: Chiloguembelinidae Reiss, 1963
taxonomic rank: Family
Taxonomic discussion: Now that Streptochilus is assigned to the Bolivinidae (Chapter 19, this volume), the Family Chiloguembelinidae includes only the genus Chiloguembelina. As described by Reiss (1963) the family is defined by the biserial chamber arrangement around an elongated axis, a test that is usually twisted, having a single, interiomarginal asymmetrical aperture with a low to high arch and bordered by an asymmetrically situated flap. Reiss (1963) originally assigned Chiloguembelina and Zeauvigerina to the Chiloguembelinidae. Huber and Boersma (1994) investigated Late Cretaceous zeauvigerinids and concluded that these two groups are not phylogenetically related and Zeauvigerina was assigned to the Heterohelicoidea (Huber and others, 2006).

The Family Chiloguembelinidae evolved in the earliest Paleocene (Zone Pα) from Guembelitria cretacea via Woodringina claytonensis (Olsson and others, 1999, and references therein) and probably gave rise to the Cassigerinellidae (Chapter 18, this volume). Brönnimann and Resig (1971) described the genus Streptochilus, which is distinguished from Chiloguembelina by the presence of an internal toothplate connecting successive foramina (Poore and Gosnell, 1985), a prominent extension of an apertural collar, and a smooth to granular rather than pustulose to costate surface texture (Huber and others, 2006). Many authors (Brönnimann and Resig, 1971; Resig and Kroopnick, 1983; Poore and Gosnell, 1985), assumed that this planktonic genus evolved from Chiloguembelina. Huber and others (2006) included the Genus Streptochilus in the Family Chiloguembelinidae and assumed that Streptochilus was derived from Chiloguembelina during the middle Eocene. Recent molecular studies imply that the Chiloguembelinidae are not related to the biserial genus Streptochilus, which is genetically close to the benthic foraminiferal taxon Bolivina (Darling and others, 2009; Smart and Thomas, 2006, 2007, Chapter 19, this volume). Catalog entries: Chiloguembelinidae

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Guembelitrioidea): Biserial, enrolled biserial and triserial taxa. Wall microperforate.
This taxon: Small biserial test, often with a slightly twisted coiling axis. Intercameral sutures distinct, depressed, and often somewhat oblique. Aperture arched, rimmed by narrow lip, and generally infolded on one side of ultimate chamber.

NB These concise distinguishing features statements are used in the tables of daughter-taxa to act as quick summaries of the differences between e.g. species of one genus.
They are being edited as the site is developed and comments on them are especially welcome.
