Original Description
"Diagnosis.- Test free, planconvex, low-trochospirally coiled, equatorial periphery rounded to slightly lobate; axial periphery subangular. Wall calcareous, perforate, surface coarse and finelr pitted. Chambers subangular, 12-14, arranged in about two and one-half whorls, the last whorls, the last whorl with 6-8 chambers slowly increasing in size. Sutures on the spiral side tangential, straight to very slightly depressed. Umbilicus small, deep. Aperture a distinct slit at the base of the last chamber extraumbilical, covered with a thin apertural lip.

Size: Dimensions of holotype: Largest diameter 0.32 mm.

Remarks: Colom (1954) illustrated a form from the upper Ypresian to lower Lutetian of Spain under the name Globorotalia cf. albeari, which has a striking resemblance with Globorotalia wartsteinensis. Apparently the specimens from Spain have a larger number of chambers per whorl and a more lobulate equatorial periphery. To prove the synonymy of those two forms would necessitate comparison of type material. The present species is related to Globorotalia matseensis, but differs by the more planoconvex test, the slower increase in size of chambers on the spiral side, and the larger number of chambers per whorl.

Stratigraphic range: In the material from the Helvetikum near Salzburg, Globorotalia wartsteinensis has a restricted stratigraphic range. In the type sample it was found together with Globorotalia aragonensis, G. aragonensis caucasica, G. spinuloinfiata, Globigerina ex gr. triloculinoides, G. semzi, G. cf. soldadoensis angulosa, G. cf. frontosa, G. hagni, G. aspensis, and G. eocaena. In other samples it is also found with "Globigerinoides" higgensi, Globigerina inaequispira, and Globanomalina wilcoxensis. In the interval with Globorotalia mattseensis, of definite lower Middle Eocene age, Globorotalia wartsteinensis docs not occur. Based upon the associated planktonic fauna, the occurrence of Globorotalia wartsteinensis is not older than the Globorotalia palmerae Zone of Trinidad, interpreted as uppermost Lower Eocene (Bolli, 1957b). The nan- nofiora reported by Stradner and Papp (1961, p. 152) from one of the samples with Globorotalia wartsteinensis (sample Mattsee 105 of Stradner and Papp) does not contain Discoaster lodoensis, which is diagnostic of the Lower Eocene, but has a flora suggestive of a Middle Eocene age. Thus, either the Globorotalia palmerae Zone of Trinidad should be considered as belonging to the Middle Eocene or the time interval with Globorotalia wartsteinensis is not represented in Bolli's zonation of Trinidad, in which case it would be located between the Globorotalia palmerae and Hantkenina aragonensis Zones.
