Sphaeroidinella sp. Specimens which cannot be assigned to established species
Taxonomy
Citation: Sphaeroidinella Cushman 1927taxonomic rank: genusType species: Sphaeroidina bulloides var. dehiscensTaxonomic discussion: This monotypic genus is justified by preserving common usage and paying tribute to the significance of the development of supplementary apertures as a genus-level character among all other Neogene lineages of planktonic foraminifera. [Brummer & Kucera 2022]
Distinguishing features: Parent taxon (Globigerinidae): Wall spinose, usually with 3½-6 globular chambers in final whorl, trochospiral or planispiral This taxon: Like Sphaeroidinellopsis but with supplementary apertures
NB These concise distinguishing features statements are used in the tables of daughter-taxa to act as quick summaries of the differences between e.g. species of one genus. They are being edited as the site is developed and comments on them are especially welcome.
Description
Morphology: The genus Sphaeroidinella is distinguished from Sphaeroidinellopsis by the presence of supplementary apertures on the spiral side. [Kennett & Srinivasan 1983]0
Biogeography and Palaeobiology
Geographic distribution Phylogenetic relationsSphaeroidinella evolved from Sphaeroidinellopsis in the earliest Pliocene by developing supplementary apertures and larger test size (Text Fig. 23). The initial evolutionary appearance of Sphaeroidinella marks the base of Zone N19 (Early Pliocene). [Kennett & Srinivasan 1983]
Most likely ancestor:Sphaeroidinellopsis - at confidence level 5 (out of 5). Data source: Kennett & Srinivasan 1983.
Biostratigraphic distribution
Geological Range: Last occurrence (top): Extant. Data source: Total of ranges of the species in this database First occurrence (base): within PL1 [Atl.] zone (4.37-5.72Ma, base in Messinian stage). Data source: Total of ranges of species in this database
Plot of occurrence data:
Range-bar - range as quoted above, pink interval top occurs in, green interval base occurs in.
Triangles indicate an event for which a precise placement has been suggested
Neptune data: This is a higher taxon page so Neptune data is not plotted. See also: customisable plot Parent: Globigerinidae
