Planomalina pulchella

Classification: pf_mesozoic -> Planomalinidae -> Planomalina -> Planomalina pulchella
Sister taxa: P. buxtorfi, P. praebuxtorfi, P. pulchella, P. sp.

Taxonomy

Citation: Planomalina pulchella Todd&Low, 1964
Taxonomic rank: species
Basionym: Planomalina pulchella Todd and Low, 1964
Taxonomic discussion: It co-occurs with P. praebuxtofi and P. buxtorfi at holes 1050C and 1052E (Blake Nose) The holotype and paratypes of P. pulchella at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History reveals the presence of randomly distributed muricae and fused muricae on the first chambers of the final whorl but these do not coalesce to form a peripheral keel as occurs in P. praebuxtorfi Wonders (1975). Based on the rounded periphery, absence of a keel, and presence of fused muricae aligned on the peripheral margin, this species is assigned to the genus Globigerinelloides. Petrizzo & Huber (2006) state: "distinguished by havinga planispiral, macroperforate wall with randomly distributed and fused muricae on the first chambers, and by lacking development of a peripheral keel."

Original description: Test planispiral, more elongate than circular in equatorial outline, biumbilicate, involute, lobulate periphery angular in early part gradually becoming subangular to subrounded in final chambers, peripheral angle ornamented by coarse rugose knobs over early part, rugosity diminishing over later part; early chambers small and indistinct, angular-rhomboid increasing in size and globularity as added, 7-8 in final whorl; sutures indistinct, curved, raised and nodular in early part, becoming less ornamented between middle chambers, slightly depressed, more distinct and almost straight between final chambers; wall heavily rugose in early part becoming quite smooth on final 2-3 chambers; aperture indistinct, beneath rounded arched lip at base of final chamber, outline of lip extending to umbilicus on both sides, lips of former apertures circling the umbilical area.
