Original Description

Shell thick walled, with irregular polygonal meshes, twice to four times as broad as the bars; twelve to sixteen on the radius. Sixty to eighty radial spines, pyramidal, half as long as the radius of the shell, one-fourth as broad at the base.

Diameter of the shell 200µm to 220µm, pores 6 to 12µm, bars 3µm; length of the spines 50µm, basal breadth 20µm.

Etymology:

Latin brevis + spina -ae = short spine

There was no illustration of this species in Haeckel (1887)
Haeckel listed Acanthosphaera brevispina under the subgeneric name Rhaphidosphaera,, but did not include the subgeneric name in the species name.
