Original Description

Shell thick walled, with irregular, roundish pores, twice to five times as broad as the bars; ten to twelve on the radius. Twenty radial spines conical, regularly disposed, half as long as the radius, as broad at the base as one of the largest meshes.

Diameter of the shell 200µm, pores 8 to 20µm, bars 4µm; length of the spines 50µm, basal breadth 20µm.

There was no illustration of this species in Haeckel (1887)
Haeckel listed Acanthosphaera conifera under the subgeneric name Rhaphidosphaera,, but did not include the subgeneric name in the species name.
