Citation: Archicircus Haeckel 1887
taxonomic rank: genus
Type species: Archicircus primordialis Haeckel 1887 [designated by Campbell,1954, p.D106]

Family (traditional): Trissocyclidae

Current identification:

Original Description

Stephanida with a simple amphitect or diaphragmatic ring, smooth or thorny, without branched spines and basal feet.

The genus Archicircus is the most primitive and simplest form of all Stephoidea, and probably the commom amcestral from, not only of this suborder, but of the greater number of all Nassellaria (compare above p.893). The skeleton consists only of a quite simple sagittal ring, in which commonly a slight difference of both poles of the main axis (basal and apical pole) is visible, but no difference between the dorsal and the ventral bow of the ring. In my Prodromus (1881, p.447) the species of Archicircus were disposed partly in the subgenus Monostephus, partly in the genus Lithocircus.

Etymology:
Greek archicircus = primordial ring"

Editors' Notes
[In accordance with ICZN (1961) art.23 (e,I) this genus should have been called Monostephus Haeckel 1881a, since Haeckel, 1887a treats Monostephus as a subgenus of Archicircus, and the other subgeneric name used is of a later date.

In description the text on p.893 deals with the entire legion of Nassellaria.

Synonymized with Lithocircus Müller by Petrushevskaya, p.269]
