Translation: Bathysphaera pelagica nov. gen. nov. sp. is a new representative of Collodaria, many times found in deep plankton trays, during the winters of 1954-1955, 55-56, 56-57. Unfortunately we only know its central capsule. This capsule is spherical (480-500µm diameter) translucent, yellowish, and closed by a relatively thin, but strong, membrane perforated by innumerable small pores. No Xanthellae, nor pigment nodules at its surface. The endocapsular body is, mostly, composed of large hyaline vesicles that may change forms under reciprocal pressure. They are close to the capsular membrane shaping it in many irregular polygonal areas. Endoplasm not abundant. As an exception in Collodaria, it is distributed as a film (O.5µm approx.), under the capsule and between the vesicles. Inclusions such as large, yellow, oil droplets (30µm), and the nucleus are located in the under capsular film. The nucleus (85µm diameter) is, thus, cortical. It has a biconvex lenticular shape: its external curvature is almost the same as that of the central capsule; its internal curvature is much smaller. The nucleus contains many chromatic clusters, and has, following the size of the individuals, 10 to 12 nucleolae. With this very particular structure, the genus Bathysphaera seems to be the representative of a new family, the Bathysphaeridae. The main family characteristics are the distribution and composition of the nucleus, and the occurrence of the large intracapsular vesicles. (In French.
