Original Description Shell generally conical in the upper part, subcylindrical below, with short abdomen and with stout, clublike echinoid spine, its length 0.37 total length, the tip blunted, the base simple, and the upper region a little thick, tapering more gradually in the proximal portion than distally; cephalis conical (50°), longer than usual (nearly 0.2 total length), its base more than 0.6 wider than high, the sides strictly plane, and the whole cone distinct in its contour from the thorax; thorax convex in the upper 0.5 and subcylindrical in the lower section, its widest level near the middle (nearly 0.5 total length); abdomen short (about 0.1 total length), flaring (52°), with plane or concave sides; remainder of shell characters, wall, and surface as much as in C. universa undella n. subsp., but the pores are a little bigger. Size: Length, 183µm; of horn, 73µm; diameter of aperture, 93µm; of largest pores, 16.7µm. Etymology: Latin amplus + spina -ae = wide spine Extra details from original publication Distinguishing characters: This variety differs from C. universa grandis n. var in much shorter and very different abdomen and in less swollen thorax, but the apical horns are much alike. Its horn is not at all like that of C. universa undella n. subsp. and the remaining varieties. Editors' Notes [The authors here list this species under the subgeneric name Clathrocyclia and include the subgeneric name in the species name.
