Original Description

Vertex spicule consisting of two groups of rays (3-6, commonly 3 or 4, in each group), at the ends of a short median bar, Four (or rarely 3) of these rays are much longer than the others, and bear lateral branches which join to form a simple laminar network. These longer rays are herein conventionally regarded as being directed downward. In at least one species (the type species), a second latticed lamina forms a small inverted cup just below the junction of the rays.

From the Greek oros = hill; and stauros = cross.
