Original Description

Palaeotetrapylinae n. subfam. Dumitrica, 1988, p. 184: Pyloniidae with systems of three elliptical latticed girdles in three mutually perpendicular planes. Microsphere heteropolar, without dorsal sagittal beam and with more than eight pores on the middle part and more than four on the apical.]
Skeleton of two to three systems of girdles, each girdle with four wide gates.

Etymology:
From the Greek palaio = ancient and Tetrapyle Müller.
