Entirely globular, thick-walled shell with the pentactine spicule at the apical end and a spine at the antapical one, these hexactine spicule inserted in the latticed shell. The structure of the spicule shows text-figure 1.

Extra details from original publication
Pentactinosphaera n. gen. has quite similar internal skeleton to Pentactinocarpus Dumitrica, but the former is distinguished from the latter by having a outer shell, in addition by that the four lateral spines originate from not the basal ones but their intermediate. This new genus differs from Lobactinocapsa Dumitrica in having the entirely globular outer shell and only six radial spines. Pentactinosphaera is similar to two recent genera, Heliaster and Tetrapetalon, described by Hollande and Enjumet (1960) in having a spherical outer shell and inner shell with pentactine spicule, but the former differs from the latter in lacking radial spines outside outer shell and in having the thick-walled outer shell and only six radial beams. Dumitrica described the Subfamily Pentactinocarpinae from Triassic in Romania and Italy. From Miocene sediments in Japan was found the form belonging to the same subfamily. Dumitrica pointed out that the foregoing two recent genera (Heliaster and Tetrapetalon) possess quite similar microsphere to Pentactinocarpinae. It thus appears that the discovery of the Neogene species belonging to the Subfamily Pentactinocarpinae is greatly significant on the consideration of the evolution of this subfamily. Only one species was encountered.

Stratigraphic range: Early to Middle Miocene.
