Original Description

Stichophormida (vel Stichocyrtida multiradiata aperta), with conical or pyramidal shell, without lateral ribs. Mouth dilated, with a corona of terminal feet.

From the Greek phormocampe = latticed caterpillar"

Extra details from original publication
The genus Phormocampe may be derived from the preceding Stichophormis by loss of the lateral ribs, whilst the terminal feet remain. It bears therefore to the latter the same relation that Calocyclas exhibits to Theophormis among the Tricyrtida.

[Generic name: It may seem, in accordance with ICZN (1961) art. 23(e,i), that this genus should have been called Anthocorys Haeckel, 1881a since here in 1887a Haeckel treats Anthocorys as a subgenus of Phormocampe and the other subgeneric name used is of a later date. However, this now seems inappropriate since the type species of Anthocorys (subsequently designated by Campbell, 1954, p.D139, A regularis Rust, 1885) is not include here in Phormocampe at the time of its generic definition.]
