Current identification:
Original Description Shell narrowly conical, as a whole 7-22°; apical horn generally much like a blunt stub; cephalis longer than wide, narrowly biconvex, spindle-shaped, its neck only mildly constricted, free of pores and hyaline; thorax forming over 0.9 total length, with rather sudden change in contour in upper 0.3-0.5 from a cone of about 20-37° which has a basal diameter of 0.23-0.31 total length to either a subcylinder or a narrower cone of not over 10° in lower section, sometimes again contracted in apertural 0.3 or less; aperture more or less regularly circular, often ragged (torn?); wall of thorax hyaline; pores regularly subcircular, larger in lower than in upper shell but not with sudden change in size, fairly well spaced, distinct, with narrow, sharp frames around each pore which do not connect from pore to pore, about 10-12 pores in a row across diameter of lower shell and in 16 (down to 12) vertical rows. Size: Length of shell, 180µm; diameter of aperture, 40µm. Extra details from original publication Distinguishing characters: Cephalis without pores, and there is a short horn, unlike gracilis (Haeckel, 1887), in which cephalis has pores and horn is long. Thorax slender and generally similar in two species; dimensions do not differ greatly. Previously described species, gracilis, is from Barbados. Sethoconus subtilis (Carnevale, 1908), from lower Miocene of Italy, has scattered, widely separated, transversely arranged, elliptical pores and is 237µm in length. Editors' Notes [Campbell and Clark here list the species under the subgeneric name Cornutellium and include the subgeneric name in the species name.
