Stylosphaera datura

Citation: Stylosphaera datura Clark & Campbell 1945
Taxonomic rank: species
Described on page(s) : p.12, figs.23
Type locality: LL598

Original Description

Shell spherical with 2 similar, equal, opposite polar spines in 1 axis, these spines long (about the same as the diameter of the cortical shell), with similar 3-bladed prismatic, narrow, thin-edged, straight, terminally sharp, triangular blades with very little basal flare; cortical shell having long (0.33 length of polar spines), thin, sharp, usually straight, needlelike by-spines which arise as sepaloid points from the nodes of the polygonal framework so that the whole surface is exceedingly spiny; medullary shell globular, small (only 0.35 diameter of cortical shell), and spported by at least a dozen rather stout, prismatic radial beams; pores of cortical shell large, not numerous (about a dozen across a diameter), strictly circular, and rather deeply set into the thick, raised subhexagonal meshwork, everywhere similar in size and form; pores of medullary shell few (not more than 5 across a diameter), similarly circular and regular in size, within heavy hexagonal meshes.

Size:
Length of polar spines 153µm, of by-spines 43µm; diameter of cortical shell 150µm, of medullary shell 46µm, of cortical pores 10µm.

Etymology:
No information given

Extra details from original publication
Distinguishing features: Stylosphaera datura n. sp. has longer by-spines than other species and recalls, in this respect, Staurolonche tetraxyphos n. sp., which differs from it in larger size and in having more main-spines.

Editors' Notes
Tha authors here list Stylosphaera datura under the subgeneric name Stylosphaerella and include the subgeneric name in the species name.[comment from RadWorld database]
