Original Description

Shell globular, with two polar spines of equal length, these rather thin and needle-like, of approximately the same diameter throughout, circular in cross section except in the distal 0.3 or more, where there are three feeble slightly twisted angles, the tips minutely blunted, the spines about as long as the diameter of the cortical shell; cortical shell spherical, wall moderately thick, surface with large subcircular pores sunken into subhexagonal areas, with conical sepaloid points making the whole surface bristly, pores six across a radius; medullary shell about 0.3 diameter of cortical shell, with four (? ) circular pores across a radius, bars thick, dense, two polar supporting beams stronger than the more numerous radial ones.

Size:
Length of polar spines, 140µm; diameter of cortical shell, 160µm; of medullary shell, 43µm; of pores of cortical shell, 10µm.

Distinguishing characters: Stylosphaera gonioxyphos differs from the other species of the genus in the distally angled polar spines. In other species, the angulation is either limited to the bases of the spines, or else continued the whole length of the spine, forming a blade, or sword-like spine. The polar spines are much thinner than those of S. minor n. sp.

Editors' Notes
[The authors here list this species under the subgeneric name Stylosphaerella and include the subgeneric name in the species name.
