Original Description

Shell globular with five fairly short spines all in the same plane, relatively shorter than in other subspecies, thick, tips blunted or even minutely truncated, sides expanded toward the middle, and contracted above and below, subequal, three-angled, with concave interfaces, subequidistant so that the shell has a decided pentamerous symmetry. Cortical shell thick-walled, surface with subuniformly subcircular to oval pores, four to six across a radius, sunken into hexagonal areas with sepaloid projections; medullary shell small, only a third or less the diameter of the cortical one, with three to five pores across a radius, bars thick, beams supporting this shell six visible In one plane, about a fourth the diameter of the polar spines.

Size:
Length of arms 110-170µm; diameter of cortical shell, 170µm; of medullary shell, 44µm; of pores, 17.6µm; thickness of wall, 17.6µm.

Distinguishing characters: This subspecies differs chiefly from the typical in having five instead of but two spines. It differs also from the other subspecies of the series in the number of arms, no others having that number. Minor differences are apparent in the description.

Editors' Notes
[The authors here list this subspecies under the subgeneric name Stylosphaerantha and include the subgeneric name in the species name.
