Original description: Definition.-Cortical shell generally tending to be subcylindrical, because of the concentration of protuberances in a single ring at each pole. When extra-cortical caps are present, there are often more than two or three on a pole. Outer medullary shell commonly spherical. Includes Diartus petterssoni, D. hughesi and probably D. didymus.. 
Type species.-Ommatocampe hughesi  Campbell and Clark, 1944, p. 23, P1. 3, fig. 12. The generic name is masculine, from the Greek "di-," two, double, and "artos," bread.  
Remarks. -Ommatocampe  Ehrenberg (1860,  p. 832) was considered as a possible name for  this genus, but its type species (Ommatocampe polyarthra Ehrenberg, 1872a, p. 317; 1872b, Pl. 6, 3, fig. 9) is probably a two-armed pororodiscid related to Amphymenium Haeckel - (1881, p. 460; type species A. zygartus Haeckel, 1887, p. 520, P1. 44, fig. 7), Ommathymenium Haeckel (1887, p. 520; type species Amphymenium amphistylium Haeckel, 1887, p.  520, P1. 44, fig. 9), and Monaxonium Popofsky (1912, p. 125; type species M. perforatum Popofsky, 1912, p. 126, P1. 6, fig. 3).
