Original description:
1861 - 10. H. didymocyrtis.
Translated description:
1861 - 10. H. didymocyrtis. The cortical shell is biscuit-shaped in outline, as if two ellipsoid shells had grown together, with a deep ring-shaped notch in the middle, from which radial rods extend all around to the centre to the outer medullary shell. This is spherical, its meshes are fairly equal, round, barely 1/5 as large as the largest, irregular, round ones of the cortical shell, between which numerous, irregularly protruding spines extend the length of the diameter of these meshes, with very fine spines in between. The diameter of the inner spherical medullary shell is half as large, its meshes and bars half as wide as those of the outer shell. The central capsule enclosing both medullary shells has the shape of the cortical shell, but is almost 1/3 smaller in all diameters; it is yellowish, filled with large oil globules, and surrounded by many yellow cells. The very different form of this species, which is very similar to that of the spyridines, especially the genus Ceratospyris (which, however, all have no medullary skeleton), would make it seem more appropriate to separate it from the haliommids as a separate genus: Didymocyrtis; species: Didymocyrtis Ceratospyris.
1862 - Genus character: Skeleton consists of three concentric spheroidal lattice shells connected by radial rods, of which two spherical (medullary shells) lie within the central capsule, the third elongated round (cortical shell) lies outside it and is divided into two equal segments by a central stricture. [GT]
Remarks on original description:
The 1861 description (read in year 1860, published 1861) is for 'group II: Actinomma' of the broader group Haliomma. Haeckel thus although explicitly raising Didymocyrtis to genus level also in same publication refers to it earlier as a species within Haliomma (Actinomma). A full, formal, standard published description is in Haeckel 1862
