Larcopyle hayesi irregularis neptune records: |
Remarks. This species is quite variable in morphology and is divided here into two informal varieties, which have somewhat different stratigraphic ranges and geographical distribution. No formal designation of a subspecies is made, however, as there is continuous gradation between the forms and the differences between them, although real, may also possibly be produced in some specimens by differences in preservation. A more detailed examination of the structure of the shell, including interior features, will be needed before a biologically well-founded subdivision of this morphological group is possible. Note: The original type material of Chen (1975) was lost before being deposited. Therefore, a replacement type specimen is designated here. The specimen chosen shows a common morphology that is nearly intermediate between the two informally defined varieties, L. h. ‘hayesi’ and L. h. ‘irregularis’, although it would be assigned to the L. h. hayesi variety. More distinctive examples of both varieties are illustrated by other specimens in Plate 11. (from Lazarus and Pallant 2005).

Catalog entries: Prunopyle hayesi
Original description: Shell prune-shaped, consisting of radiating spines and densely spiral shells. Pores circular, framed by hexagonal bars, aligned with the radiating spines through the spiral shells (plate 2, figure 2). Pylome circular, of variable diameter, surrounded by l2-19 cylindrical spines.
(Dimensions based on 35 specimens from 274-21-3,54-64 cm.; 274-21, CC; 274-22, CC; and 274-23, CC.) Major axis of shell 270-315µm. Minor axis of shell 207-252µm. Ratio of major axis to minor axis 1.11-1.34m.
Remarks on original description: Chen described this species twice - in IRDSDP vol 28 and Micropaleontology part 20/4. Both publications have cover dates of 1974 but actually were published in 1975 and the Micropaleontology volume is generally considered to be the valid publication. The images are typically the same in both, but the text is slighlty different. [JRY 2023]
As noted in Lazarus 1990 and Lazarus et al. 2005, Chen 1975 (DSDP volume 28) was originally dated 1974 by the publisher, but actually appeared in 1975, after Petrushevskaya 1975 (DSDP volume 29). Chen 1975 (Micropaleontology) was also originally dated 1974 by the publisher but appeared only in 1975 after Petrushevskaya.
