Catalog entries: Lithochytris vespertilio
Original description: [Obscurely 3-segmented) like a broad triangular pyramid. First segment with a hyaline, subacute apex) a basal area and an internal terminal rib. Second segment gradually dilate) porous, after a slight stricture passing into the third segment which is suddenly very broad. Third segment broader posteriorly than it is high) with three broad appendages. Entire surface covered by a multitude of small, irregular and well-separated pores irregularly (partly longitudinally) arranged. Appendages greatly thickened, subacute, porous.
Length 250µm. Breadth of the cephalis 43µm, terminal breadth 205µm. Length of larger appendage 86µm, and basal breadth of this appendage 72µm. Approx. 3-4 pores in 23µm.
The boundaries between the segments of this genus are obscure, and the entire form is very peculiar; it is to some extent similar to Lychnocanium, but terminal aperture uncertain. (Translated from Latin by E.M.R. and W.R.R.)]
Remarks on original description: Description: In addition to the above species, Ehrenberg treats the following Lithochytris species in this reference: L. pileata, L. pyramidalis and L. tripodium.
Haeckel 1887 - Lithochytris vespertilio Shell three-sided pyramidal, with two indistinct. Length of the three joints= 1:2:5, breadth = 2:3:8. Cephalis small, with a horn of the same length, conical. Thorax with subspherical cavity. Abdomen with three rounded, prominent edges, which are prolonged over the shell-base into three conical, hollow, and fenestrated feet, twice as long as the thorax, with a thick, pyramidal, terminal spine. Pores subregular, circular, of equal size in the thorax and abdomen. Dimensions: Length of the three joints, a 0.02, b 0.04, c 0.1; breadth, a 0.04, b 0.06, c 0.16.
