Catalog entries: Lophophaenidae [no catalog entry yet]
Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Plagiacanthidae):
This taxon: Two segemented plagiacanthids with well developed cephalis and thorax, and generally some external expression of primary spicules - either as lateral external spines or prolonged in thorax as ribs/feet. Cephalis generally relatively large, thorax termination irregular and lacking any special structures.
Morphology:
Haeckel 1881 (as Lophophaenida): Sethocorida [Dyocyrtida aperta eradiata] margine ostii laevi aut succiso. Petrushevskaya 1971: Plagiocanthidae with the skeleton consisting of two equal segments: cephalis and thorax. Cephalis with a large eucephalic lobe and a small antecephalic lobe. The latter is not separated from the thorax because of the weakness of the arches cp. The spine A passes through the center of the cephalis like a columella, up to branches a. Then it becomes included in the front wall of the eucephalic lobe, which at the same time is the external wall of the upper part of the cephalis. Arches ap are included through their whole length in the walls of the cephalis. The spines A, D and L form free horns or spines.
