type material: S. bilobatusOriginal description: Shell generally cylindrical, about 2 and a quarter times longer than wide, with two equal, equally spaced, rounded lobes, forming the two ends, the lobes being each about a fourth of the whole length, and the central region swells from their necks to its widest level at the middle; surface nearly smooth; spongy framework of the same structure throughout the whole except the edges of the midregion which are looser, generally the mesh compact; meshes much wider than the bars.
Length, 220µm; width across the widest part, 90µm; end knobs, 50 by 60µm, their necks, 20µm across. Distinguishing characters (rw): In form this species is like S. phalanga Haeckel (1887) but is somewhat plumper; the latter lacks the terminal lobes.
Remarks on original description: [The authors here lists this species under the subgeneric name Spongurantha and include the subgeneric name in the species name.
