Original description: Shell generally cylindrical, nearly three times longer than wide, with two equal, equidistant, angular, spatulalike lobes at the opposite ends, the ventral region as long as both lobes, this region not swollen, the necks separating lobes and midregion very dense, the reticulum being of similar structure through the whole shell, bars of the meshes very thin.
Length, 200µm; breadth, 50µm; lobes, 50 by 50µm, necks, 40µm. Distinguishing characters (rw): Spongurus spatulaeformis n. sp. resembles S. bilobatus n. sp. but has differently shaped lobes, these being inadequately shown in the photograph which was taken at a focus that does. not emphasize them, less swollen midregion, coarser mesh, and relatively thicker necks, separating the lobes and midregion.
Remarks on original description: [The authors here list this species under the subgeneric name Spongurantha and include the subgeneric name in the species name.
