Original description: Die Verschiedenartigkeit der beiden Pole ist beim Lithocircus productus (Taf. VII, Fig. 4) viel ausgesprochener als beim L. annularis, indem der im Grossen und Ganzen ovale Skeletring nach dem basalen Pole zu etwas spitz ausgezogen ist. Dei Peripherie des Ringes erhebt sich zu einer kammartig vorspringenden, medianen Kante, die an dem basalen Ende am breitesten und auf ihrer Höhe ringsum mit kurzen dicken Dornen besetzt ist. Zwei weitere, ebenfalls Dornen tragende laterale Kanten liegen beierseits der medianen, auf unserer Figur die eine nach vorn, die andere nicht sichtbare nach hinten von ihr, und enden mit vier kurzen gebogenen Stacheln, die den basalen Pol des Skelets auzeichnen. Die Ringform des Skelets ist, wie ich oben schon im Anschluss an Haeckel's Ergebnisse hervorgehoben habe, der Ausgangspunkt für eine Anzahl weiterer Formen, die durch das Auftreten neuer Theile eine grössere Complication erlangen; bei der Besprechung denken wir uns dieselben stets so gestellt, dass man auf die mediane Kante blickt und die beiden lateralen rechts und links vor sich hat, d. h. im Verhältniss zu den in den Figuren 4 und 5 abgebildeten Skeleten um einen Winkel von 90° um die Längsaxe gedreht; bei dieser Lagerung sieht man natürlich nur immer die eine, dem Beschauer zugewandte Hälfte des Rings.
Translated description: The diversity of the two poles is much more pronounced in Lithocircus productus (Plate VII, Fig. 4) than in L. annularis, in that the generally oval skeletal ring is drawn out to a somewhat pointed point towards the basal pole. The periphery of the ring rises to a comb-like, projecting median edge, which is widest at the basal end and is covered with short, thick thorns all around at its height. Two further lateral edges, also bearing spines, lie on either side of the median, on our figure one facing forward, the other, not visible, facing backwards, and end with four short curved spines that mark the basal pole of the skeleton. The ring shape of the skeleton is, as I have already emphasized above following Haeckel's results, the starting point for a number of other shapes which acquire greater complexity through the appearance of new parts; When discussing them, we always imagine them positioned in such a way that we look at the median edge and have the two lateral edges on the right and left in front of us, i.e. rotated by an angle of 90° about the longitudinal axis in relation to the skeletons shown in Figures 4 and 5; When held this way, of course, you can only see the half of the ring that is facing the viewer. Benson 1966 - Zygocircus productus Test a single sagittal ring, ovoid to subpolygonal in outline, with a straight vertical bar, a straight or convex outward apical bar, and a curved or angulated superior bar. Median bar short, cylindrica1, with six short, thorn-like, basal spines consisting of the axial, primary and secondary lateral and dorsal spines. Bars of the ring three-bladed in section; sagittal blade without secondary spines, lateral blades with 10-20 regularly disposed, blade-like to conical spines. A short thorn-like vertical spine or thorn extends from the vertical bar; apical spine, when present, of variable length, extends from the apical bar. Measurements: based on 30 specimens from stations 92, 93, 106, 115, 133, and 136: maximum height of ring 79-186 µm, maximum breadth 56-113 µm, length of apical spine 0-72 µm, of vertical spine 5-14 µm, of dorsal spine 3-26 µm, of axial spine 1-10 µm, of secondary spines arising from the ring 5-30 µm. Remarks: Hertwig's illustration (1879, Pl. 7, fig. 4) of Lithocircus productus shows only four basal spines arising from the median bar instead of six. These include the axial spine, one primary and one secondary lateral spine, and the dorsal spine. The other two spines apparently were overlooked.A straight vertica1 bar and the apical and vertica1 spines also are not apparent in his illustration, but again these are easily overlooked. Distribution: This species is cosmopolitan but rare in the Gulf. It is absent at stations 90, 99, 130, 184, 191, 203, 206, and 214.It has a slightly greater frequency in the central part of the Gulf, namely at stations 81, 91, 106, 115, and 136, a fact which may reflect its response to upwelling. It is very rare in the southern third of the Gulf. It is very rare in the northern third of the Gulf and, therefore, is not very tolerant of the higher than average salinities and temperatures there. Haeckel (1887, p. 948) reports this species as cosmopolitan, occuring at the surface in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans as well as in the Mediterranean Sea.
