Taxonomy

Taxonomic rank: family (new classif)
Taxonomic discussion: The scope of this family as used here is closer to the original concept of Haeckel and subsequent authors, and almost certainly polyphyletic and broader than that of Sandin et al. 2021. They restricted it to forms in a single molecular group ('clade D') with a small medullary shell, large bladed spines embedded in a spongy cortical sphere.  The earlier usage is nonetheless retained as there is still too little molecular data to define what the natural classification of most these other forms should be, and until such data is available this family is still of practical use. - dl

Description

Published descriptions

Sandin et al. 2021 -

Clade D is composed of four novel sequences obtained in this study. All specimens of this clade show a single, very small spherical shell where several long and three bladed spines grow interconnected by a spongy mesh.
