Original Description
Diagnosis: A subspecies of Neosemantis distephanus characterized by the presence of a vertical spine. Name: verticalis (Latin)—vertical—to point out the distinctiveness of the vertical spine. Description: Skeleton spherical, 72-135 µm in diameter formed principally by 3 arches joined together apically and to the median bar basally at angles of approximately 120°. Arches are apical and 2 primary lateral bars, which are robust, 9-20 µm in diameter, and tribladed, bear a profusion of short spicules. Frontal spine 5-18 µm long ; may be sulcate and spiculate (pi. 4, fig. 12) or smooth and simple (pl. 4. figs. 9. 15). Simple vertical spine 8 - 1 2 µm long projects obliquely upward from back of median bar (plate 4, figs. 8. 12, 15). Axobate small, obscure. Some older specimens have a short, spiculate apical spine 6-22 pm long (pl. 4, fig. 9) ; upper portions of primary lateral bars may have clear discontinuity in curvature (pl. 4, figs. 9, 10). Younger specimens are smaller and have more slender arches. Oldest specimens have simple spicules of approximately equal length (pl. 4. figs. 9, 12,15). On other specimens, some spicules near median bar are 15 to 18 µm long, very slender, with nodular appearances (pl. 4, fig. 11). Rare specimens have all nodular spicules (pl. 4, fig. 8). Lowest lateral pair of spicules on apical bar of many specimens nodular, bifurcate, with proximal branch projecting downward (pl. 4, figs. 11, 14). Holotype: USNM 253208, DSDP Hole 77B. core 25, section 4, 11-13 cm; England Finder 023/3; plate 4, figure 15. Paratypes: USNM 253209, DSDP Hole 77B, core 25, section 2, 7-9 cm; England Finder J37/2; plate 4, figure 12. USNM 253210, DSDP Hole, 77B, core 11, core catcher sample, England Finder E39/1 ; plate 4 figure 14. Remarks: Neosemantis distephanus verticalis, n. subsp., is distinguished from N. d. distephanus by the presence of the vertical spine, and the subspecies does not resemble other Cenozoic Nassellaria. The discontinuities in the curvature of the primary lateral bars of some specimens (pl. 4, figs. 9,12) appear to be vestiges of the point of juncture of the primary lateral bars and the verticil spicules of the apical bar on specimens of Neosemantis bjoerklundi bjoerklundi. The specimen illustrated on plate 4, figure 10. has a skeletal construction similar to N. b. bjoerklundi. n. subsp., and appears to represent the last stage of the transition to N. distephanus. Occurrence: At Site 77, Neosemantis distephanus verticalis, n. subsp. first appears in core 27 (Calocycletta costata Zone: Lower Miocene) and finally disappears in core 9 (Stichocorys peregrina Zone : Lower Pliocene).
