Original Description
Shell large, elongate (3.62 times its greatest breadth in length), generally bitruncate spindle-shaped, two opposite ends nearly squarely truncated and their breadth is about 0.36 median breadth, sides more or less regularly, although obscurely subcylindrlcal for about 0.3 of length, thence, in median region mildly, but not widely biconvex; surface without long radial spines, generally minutely thorny; internally, shell loosely frothy with wide alveoles and very delicate framework, everywhere of similar structure.

Size: Length, total, 620µm; size of alveoles, 12.2µm.

Distinguishing features: Spongurus occidentalis n. sp., differs from Tertiary fossil species, S. phalanga (Stöhr, 1880; Haeckel, 1887) in being less elongate (3.6 rather than 5 times breadth in length), and in having coarse alveoles.
