Original Description
Shell thin walled, with irregular roundish, polygonally framed meshes, three to four times as broad as the bars. Radial spines arising from all the nodal-points of the network, pyramidal at the base in the distal half bristle-shaped, as long as the radius.
Diameter of the shell 0.12, pores 0.006 to 0.008, bars 0.002; length of the spines 0.07.
Etymology: Latin arcticus -a -um = boreal

Haeckel listed Acanthosphaera arctica under the subgeneric name Rhaphidodrymus, but did not include the subgeneric name in the species name.
