Original Description Shell thin walled, about six times as broad as one mesh. Pores subregular, hexagonal, with thread-like bars; three to four on the radius. Radial spines about twenty, three-sided pyramidal, as long as the diameter, and one-third as broad at the base as one pore.
Diameter of the shell 60 to 90µm, pores 10 to 14µm, bars below 1µm; length of the spines 70 to 80µm, basal breadth 30 to 40µm. Etymology: Latin forti + spina -ae = robust spine Editors' Notes There was no illustration of this species in Haeckel (1887) Haeckel listed Acanthosphaera fortispina under the subgeneric name Rhaphidocapsa, but did not include the subgeneric name in the species name.
