Original Description
Shell thick walled, with irregular, roundish pores, twice to eight times as broad as the bars; twelve to twenty on the radius. Radial spines very numerous (two to three hundred), short, conical, scarcely as long as the diameter of the largest meshes, and one-third as broad.

Diameter of the shell 300 to 400µm, pores 8 to 30µm, bars 4µm; length of the radial spines 30µm, basal breadth 10µm.

There was no illustration of this species in Haeckel (1887)
Haeckel listed Acrosphaera maxima the subgeneric name Rhaphidosphaera, but did not include the subgeneric name in the species name.
