Actinommidae (sensu stricto) - for all actinommids in the classical Riedel sense that do not clearly fall into one of the other, more restricted new families. Note that several proposed new families, or older concepts such as Ethmosphaeridae Haeckel (also included in some newer family classifications), are not included yet in mikrotax. Ethmosphaeridae for example was defined as for all forms with no major external spines. It is not clear if the lack of 'major' external spines is a natural high taxonomic level character, and there are also many species with spines of intermediate size and thus dubious affinity. Inconsistent usage of genus names for species both with, and without external spines further complicates assignment of genera. Many species in 'Actinommidae ss'. may eventually be assigned to other families with further taxonomic study and formal revision in the literature. - dl
