Original Description

Le genre Arachnostylus se rapproche d'Excentroconcha par l'organisation de sa capsule centrale. Il s'en éloigne, au contraire, par la disposition de son squelette. Ce dernier, en effet, comprend une microsphère intracapsulaire d'où s'échappent un certain nombre de spicules simples, non tricarénès, portant dans leur milieu deux ou trois verticilles de branches qui sont à l'origine d'une coque grillagée corticale. La microsphère, d'un type primitif, n'est pas sans analogie avec celle d'un Heliaster. Elle comprend à l'origine quatre baguettes siliceuses correspondant chacune à un spicule et qui rayonnent à partir d'un point situé contre l'axoplaste. L'une des baguettes reste indivise ; les trois autres poussent, par contre, des trabécules qui s'anastomosent et donnent ainsi naissance à quelques alvéoles microsphériques.

The genus Arachnostylus is close to Excentroconcha by the structure of its central capsule. It differs by its skeleton. This one includes an intra-capsular microsphere from which project some simple, not three-sided, spicules with 2 or 3 verticils of branches in their middle part. The branches of the verticils produce a latticed cortical shell. The microsphere, of a primitive type, is somewhat close to that of Heliaster. It is constituted by 4 primary siliceous rods extending as spicules, but radiating from a central point located near the axoplast. One rod remains undivided; the three others grow, to the contrary, some trabeculae that are anastomozed to produce some microspheric alveoles. (Translation by J.P.C.)]
