Editors' Notes
A new name proposed for Artopera Haeckel,1887a p. 1452 a Junior homonym of Artopera Haeckel 1881a p. 438.

Haeckel (1881, p.438) defined Artopera as ""Tetracyrtida clausa triradiata, costis, tribus lateralibus clathratis."" This characterization clearly states that the shell possesses latticed and not solid, lateral wings or ribs. Consequently, Haeckel's first usage of the name in 1887 (p.1450) as a subgenus of Cyrtopera Haeckel 1881 is correct, but the second usage (p.1452) for forms with solid and not latticed wings or ribs is not, and a new name is needed for the latter group of beautiful and familiar species. Haeckel (1887) described two additional species from the Challenger collections besides the type.

This genus differs from Stichopera Haeckel 1881 in lacking longitudinal combs and is distinguished from Cyrtopera Haeckel 1881 by the solid rather than latticed wings or ribs.
