Original Description

The species from which this genus is described was discovered by Popofsky (1913) in the plankton from the SW Indian Ocean and was placed by this author in the genus Androspyris (fam. Spyroidae). Popofsky had placed this species in this family because he thought that the form was close to another one from the same sample and that he had described as Androspyris pithecus Haeckel. But if both specimens observed by Popofsky were similar, it seems that their taxonomic assignments were wrong. When comparing illustrations and descriptions from Haeckel and Popofsky, one can see that the form described as A. pithecus by Popofsky is considerably different from that described by Haeckel. The description of the first species as Androspyris aptenodytes is, thus, wrong (see below).

Only forms close to the type species can be related to the genus Androspyris. But Haeckel did not precise the type species of this genus. The first species he quoted (A. homunculus) is described, but not illustrated; the second one (A. antropiscus) is well illustrated (1887a, pl.83, fig.8). It appears then that this species is a true Spyroid. As Haeckel says: its shell is composed of 3 segments - above a trilocular cephalis is located a helm or ""galea"
