Current identification:
Original Description Cortical shell lenticular, with three equatorial keels, the middle one armed with 12-20 conical or slightly flattened spines of irregular length and thickness. Four of them are external prolongations of the polar and saggital beams of the microsphere whereas the others may correspond to other internal beams or may have no connection with any internal radial element. Cortical wall thin, smooth-surfaced, with small, dense pores of irregular arrangement. On the periphery the wall is thick and spongy. A thin spongy meshwork lines also the inner side of the whole cortical shell. Medullary shell centrally placed and small, formed of two complete systems, sometimes with incipient stages of a third. It lies with the sagittal plane in the equatorial plane of the cortical shell and is connected to the latter through the dimensive and diagonal beams and also a number of other beams. Sagittal and polar beams, lying in the equatorial plane of the shell, are always thicker. All radial beams before joining the cortical wall ramify or bear a number of irregular branches that merge into the internal spongy meshwork that lines the wall.
(based on 12 specimens): Size medullary shell 55µm, diameter of cortical shell (excluding spines) 220-250µm, thickness of shell 135-140µm, maximum length of spines 150µm. Etymology: Greek coccos + larnax, meaning nucleus chest Editors' Notes Equivalent to Coccodiscid gen. et sp. indet., Riedel and Sanfilippo, 1973, pl. 3, fig. 2.
