Description

Published descriptions

Dumitrica, in De Wever et al. 2001 -

Type genus: Collosphaera Müller 1855

Definition: Colonial Spumellaria. Each central capsule in a mature colony surrounded by a distinct, generally irregular globular latticed shell with pore simple, or  surrounded by tubular extensions or spines.

Remarks: The Collosphaeridae differ from all other spumellarians in being colonial and having cortical spines arising directly from the rim of the pores and not from the frames between the pores.

Range: Eocene, or earlier, to Recent.

Lazarus et al. 2021 -

Collodaria with a single, more or less spherical lattice shell, made of flat strips of hyaline material and bearing pores of various sizes and shapes. In some species pore rims are variously enlarged into rims, spines or tubes.
