Original Description

Shell small, generally spiny, elliptical, with several polar spines variable in number in different individuals from same locality, generally two to four, often three, grouped at each of two opposite poles of shell, usually same number at each end of same specimen, these polar spines often rather long (sometimes as much as radius of long axis of shell), but not all of those of same group of same length, swordlike, with three similar, equidistant, peripherally sharp, apically pointed, somewhat twisted, wide blades with median expansion, merged separately at bases with shell surface; cortical shell olive- or egg-shaped, major axis (long axis) as much as 1.2 minor axis (transverse axis); more rarely shell almost circular (Fig.27), and sides regularly contoured; medullary shell of similar proportions, about 0.45 diameter of cortical shell, its sides evenly contoured; wall of cortical shell with numerous, rather long, needlelike spines which arise as sepaloid points at angles of subhexagonal pore-frames; supporting beams strong, polar ones especially, prismatic, four transverse, 16 radial, four to eight polar; pores of cortical shell deeply set, circular, seven in major axis and five in minor, within very strong, heavy, raised, funnelled subhexagonal frames which form surface reticulum; pores of medullary shell circular, seven in major axis, with thin, delicate frames.

Size:
Length of long axis of cortical shell, 99µm, of polar spines, upward to 52.8µm, of medullary shell, 44µm; diameter, of cortical pores, 13.2µm, of medullary pores, 6.6µm.

Extra details from original publication
Distinguishing characters: Inspection of figures of this abundant species shows considerable variation which, in addition to characters mentioned above, include position of polar spines, amount of spinescence of surface of cortical shell, and development of these surface spines in strength and length.
