Original Description
Shell fairly large, with concentric spheres, outer one a felty mass and inner (medullary) sphere regular, with four crossed polar spines in a single plane and at right angles to each other, these spines long (approximately 0.7 diameter of shell), three-angled, blades equal, equidistant, straight, with median expansion, triangular, apically blunted, peripherally thick, and basally broad; cortical shell globular, frothy, consisting of erect, conical (about 0.1 length of polar spines), basally and laterally freely anastomosed sepaloid points, forming a prickly surface and extremely dense; medullary shell, also globular, about 0.8 diameter of cortical shell, consisting of a hollow lattice-sphere with thick wall (0.1 its diameter); pores of medullary shell circular, deeply and widely set into heavy framework which has tall, flaring funnels around each pore; from meshwork arise sepaloid points which give origin to cortical shell and form its radial supporting structure.

Length of polar spines, 90?m; diameter of shell, 130?m. Distinguishing characters (rw): This unique species occurs with Spongatractus californicus n. sp. and resembles it except for its two opposite polar spines rather than four crossed ones. Similarity may have been result of a common habit.
