Original Description

Cortical shell spherical, latticed, usually thick-walled, separated from the medullary shell by an empty space and connected with it through the primary beams and possibly other radial elements, all of them or only the first prolonged outside into conical or cylindrical spines.

Etymology:
From the Greek cryptos = hidden and larnax = chest. Neuter gender.
