Original Description

Cyphinida with double cortical shell and double medullary shell, without polar spines or tubes.

Etymology:
From the Greek cypassis = a girl's girdle"

Extra details from original publication
The genus Cypassis differs from Cyphonium by duplication of the cortical twin-shell; from the outer surface of the simple twin-shell arise numerous radial spines, which become connected by anastomosing transverse branches, and in this manner form an outer envelope or mantle. Cypassis may also be regarded as a Cromyodruppa, the double cortical shell of which is constricted in the equatorial plane.

[Campbell, 1954, D74 considers Cypassis Haeckel, 1887a to be an objective synonym of Astromma Ehrenberg,1847a. He designates Astromma entomocora Ehrenberg, 1847a [invalid name] as the type species of Astromma and only by inference of Cypassis. However, the type species of Astromma by subsequent monotypy is Astromma aristotelis Ehrenberg, 1847b. Therefore, we consider Chediya's designation [1959, p.117] of Cypassis palliata Haeckel, 1887a, p.366 to be valid.

It may seem, in accordance with ICZN (1961) art. 23 (e, i) that this genus should have been called Didymocyrtis Haeckel, 1860 since here in 1887a Haeckel treats Didymocyrtis as a subgenus of Cypassis and the other subgenus, Didymospyris, is of a later date. However, this seems inappropriate, since the type species of Didymocyrtis (by absolute tautonomy, Haliomma didymocyrtis Haeckel, 1860) is not among the species included in Didymocyrtis at the time of its assignment as a subgenus of Cypassis. Haeckel assigns a date of 1881 for the other subgenus, Didymospyris. However, since Didymospyris is not acutally mentioned in Haeckel, 1881a, it is considered to date from 1887a. Therefore, because the name Cypassis is of the same date, Cypassis remains the appropriate generic name.}
