Original Description
2. Subfamilia: Pylophormida. Pylonida testa medullari simplici aut duplici praedita, quae radiis cum pontibus clathratis (inter fissuras testae ellipticae complanatae magnas sitis) conjuncta est.
D. fissuris sex symmetricis.
DI. testa sexfida simplici.

Translation: 2. Subfamily: Pylophormida. Pylonida with single or double medullary shell, which is joined by radii with latticed bridges (situated between the large gates of the flattened elliptical test).
D. With six symmetrical gates.
DI. With simple test divided into six parts. (Translated from Latin by E.M.R. and W.R.R.)]

Etymology: From the Greek hexapyle = with six gate-openings"
