Inversumbella

Citation: Inversumbella Nigrini & Caulet 1992
Taxonomic rank: genus
Type species: Acanthocorys macroceras Haeckel 1887
Described on page(s) : 150

Current identification:

Original Description

Shell two-segmented. Thorax pyramidal with three primary external ribs prolonged into divergent terminal feet and three secondary ribs within the thoracic wall that are also prolonged into terminal feet. Apical spine free within the cephalis and centrally located.

Etymology:
The six prolonged divergent ribs of this genus remind us of an umbrella turned inside out by the wind, hence Inversumbella.

Editors' Notes
Although the definition of this genus is similar to that for Acanthocorys Haeckel, the species we describe below does not appear to be related to the unfigured type species of Acanthocorys (A. hexapodia Haeckel 1887, p.1262), nor to the type species (A. umbellifera Haeckel 1862, p.305, pl. 6, fig. 12) of its subgenus Acanthocoronium. G. ? macroceras differs from these type species primarily by having a smaller cephalis with a free, centrally located apical spine and by the absence of large openings on the proximal part of the thorax. Hence, we feel justified in erecting a new, monospecific genus within the same family, Anthocyrtida Haeckel 1887.

Petrushevskaya (1981) tentatively placed, without explanation, A. macroceras in the genus Lamprodiscus Ehrenberg 1860. However, we do not think that the species is at all related to the type species (L. monoceras Ehrenberg (1872), pl. 7, fig. 2) of this genus. L. monoceras lacks strong thoracic ribs and both primary and secondary terminal feet.

Stratigraphic range: Miocene to Recent.
