Original Description
Apertura unica (simplex aut cancellala). Testularum articuli seu stricturae distincta. Testae stricturis pluribus, articulo postico clauso postica parte lobata aut appendicibus (aculeis).

Translation: Aperture single (simple or latticed). Test with segments or distinct strictures. Test with more than one stricture, last segment closed. Posterior part lobate or distinguished by appendages (spines). (Translated from Latin by E.M.R. and W.R.R.)]

Etymology: From the Greek lithochytris = pot of silex
